Support Worker – Supported Living

SEA Support Services are looking for a dedicated Support Worker to join a small, person-centred team supporting a profoundly deaf young adult man with CHARGE syndrome and complex needs, who lives in supported living with one other resident.

You'll be part of a small, experienced support team providing 1:1 support to help him live his life to the fullest.

About the Young Man

He is a happy and easy-going young man with a determined personality. He loves spending time outdoors -walking, cycling on his special tricycle, climbing, and swimming. He thrives on routine and feels happiest when surrounded by people who understand him and communicate with him in ways that make him feel secure and valued.

Due to his profound deafness, severe learning disabilities, and multi-sensory impairments (MSI), he uses a variety of communication methods including sign language, gestures, picture symbols, and consistent routines. At times he may display obsessive or challenging behaviours - your ability to stay calm, patient, and consistent is important. Building trust takes time, but when he connects with you, the rewards are enormous.

If you're someone who sees the person beyond the disability and you're ready to build a trusting, meaningful relationship with a remarkable young man, we'd love to hear from you.

Your Role Will Include

  • Supporting him with all aspects of daily living, including personal care, meals, household tasks, and shopping

  • Encouraging and facilitating activities he enjoys, such as walking, cycling, climbing, swimming, and baking

  • Supporting him in vocational activities at the David Lewis Centre two days a week

  • Encouraging independence and supporting him to learn new skills at his own pace

  • Supporting his communication and sensory needs using agreed approaches, including sign language and visual communication methods

  • Working collaboratively with his family, health professionals, and your team to ensure consistent, high-quality support

  • Maintaining clear records and following his individual support plan

The Ideal Candidate

Essential:

  • Experience as a Support Worker with adults or children with severe learning disabilities, complex needs, or multi-sensory impairments (MSI)

  • Deaf awareness and a good understanding of individual communication needs

  • Knowledge or experience of picture symbols, visual timetables, and alternative communication methods

  • British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 or above

  • Ability to work effectively as part of an established team

  • Empathy, patience, and a strong commitment to person-centred support

  • Full UK driving licence (he has his own Motability vehicle)

  • NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care (training can be provided)

Desirable:

  • Experience or knowledge of CHARGE syndrome

  • Intervenor training

  • Dysphagia (swallowing/eating) training

Personal Qualities

You'll need to be cheerful, expressive, and engaging - someone who brings positivity and energy into his daily life. Patient and calm under pressure, with the ability to build rapport through warmth, consistency, and creative communication.
